New Year's Resolution: Add Value.
So the new year is coming up and what kind of newbie blogger would I be if I didn't write about new year's resolutions?
I've read so many articles lately about not making resolutions. People are saying it's stupid to wait for a new year to decide to change your life or it's pointless because you never stick to them anyway. Well after all my reading, I was on the fence about actually writing down resolutions for 2016. If I'm being completely honest here, I am the kind of person who does not stick to resolutions... If I had a dollar for every time I put down something like "lose weight" or "exercise more" and then didn't stick to it, I'd have about $11.... (remember new year's resolutions are written annually and I'm only 22) But still you get my point.
But today I read an article about harsh truths to make you a better person and I was compelled to write some new years resolutions. The article had mentioned something that I resonated with a lot.:
”who you are inside“ is the metaphorical dirt from which your fruit grows.
But here’s what everyone needs to know, and what many of you can’t accept:
“You” are nothing but the fruit.
Nobody cares about your dirt. ”Who you are inside“ is meaningless aside from what it produces for other people.
I think I am a good person. I also think that I have a lot to offer the world. But am I really producing any fruit?
Now this metaphorical fruit doesn't have to be something that changes the world or makes you money, it is just one more thing you can offer the world that adds to your value as a human being. If we were in an apocalypse, would your group miss you if you were eaten by zombies? Did you play guitar to take their minds off the harsh times or know your way around an engine so you could fix a car to transport them? Just add value.
I once told my boyfriend that I am a "toe-wetter." What I meant by this is I dabble in a lot of things- interests- but I never fully commit or dive in. I either lack the drive, lose interest, second guess myself, or am afraid to put in the hard work just to fail or not be "perfect." (This is really another blog post in itself.) The article addressed this too:
It’s incredibly comforting to know that as long as you don’t create anything in your life, then nobody can attack the thing you created.
That, along with the fruit metaphor, really spoke to me. This year I am going to stop making excuses, stop being scared and grow some freakin' fruit!
I wrote down a handful of resolutions that I believe completing will add value to my life or at least improve my state of being. Honestly, I may not stick to all of them (I put "get active" on my list again) but I am going to try my best. Hey, I'm putting it on the internet so someone can hold me to it! I strive to do (at least) one thing, just one thing, to add value to myself this year.
So whether you write resolutions or you don't, in the upcoming year try to do something to add to your value to yourself as a human being- learn a skill, make something, or help someone- do anything. It doesn't have to be written on a piece of paper to count, this isn't "pics or it didn't happen." Just add value.
